Depth and elegance
Monteti takes its name, like the estate, from the hill that protects the vineyard from the strong direct winds of the Mediterranean, guaranteeing us a constant, moderate sea breeze and an ideal microclimate.
It is composed of Petit Verdot (with percentages that can vary, depending on the vintage, from 40 to 60%), Cabernet Franc (between 20 and 30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (between 20 and 30%).
It matures for 18/22 months in medium toasted French oak barriques and tonneaux, 70% new and selected from different woods of origin and tonnelleries. It refines in the bottle for 24 months before being released onto the market.
Petit Verdot reflects the depth and intimacy of the woods, the strength and longevity of our stones, the proximity of the sea; Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc accompany it with classicism and finesse. With Monteti we seek the personality of the territory, the Maremma, expressed in the complexity and elegance of a great wine.
Winter vas very rainy and mild. Budding happened at the end of March, in a rainy Spring with average temperatures. Vegetative growth was vigorous and fast. Also the Summer was wet but veraison started regularly in mid-July. Harvest was linear with some showers that didn’t cause any inconvenience.
The harvest of the varieties dedicated to Monteti began the 10th of September with the Cabernet Sauvignon to be concluded the 24th of September with the Petit Verdot. Healthy grapes at an excellent maturation stage.
Of a vivid and intense ruby red, it opens to the nose with scents of dark fruits, blueberry, blackberry, ripe cherry and underwood, followed by balsamic notes, intriguing spices, hints of tobacco. In the mouth it is voluminous and enveloping with an elegant tannic texture that evolves in progression towards a persistent and notably fresh finale.

VINIFICATION: temperature-controlled fermentation in open tapered steel vats. Each one of the various plots of our vineyard is vinified in a dedicated vat and also kept separate throughout the entire ageing process, up to the moment of the blend composition.
MACERATION: up to 21 days depending on variety. Long contact with lees to drastically reduce the use of sulphites.
MATURATION: 18 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux (70% new and 30% of second passage). After the blend composition it rests in cement vats before bottling. Further 24 months of bottle ageing. No fining or filtering.
Winter was mild and dry, followed by a warm and dry Spring. The phenological stages evolved quite normally but the vegetative development was less vigorous than usual. The high temperatures and the rain scarcity lasted all Summer long. Veraison was precocious, around the 10th of July. An accurate harvest timing, faster and earlier than the norm, and a rigid selection allowed us to bring into the fermentation vats only good and healthy grapes and to tame the sugar content. Our choice, in such a difficult year, was to apply the most rigid sorting criteria to obtain very high quality.
Of a deep garnet red, it offers to the nose scents of black berries, undergrowth, grahite and coffee roaster, with delicate balsamic notes. In the mouth it is linear, intense, interwoven with harmonious and elegant tannins. Very long.

Winter was mild and wet. Spring brought very little showers and budding started between the 15th and 20th of March. Summer was hot and quite dry even if interrupted by some sporadic storm. Veraison happened regularly in mid-July. Harvest was sunny for most of the time with some little showers towards the end that didn’t cause any inconvenience. The harvest of the varieties dedicated to Monteti began the 7th of September with the Cabernet Sauvignon to be concluded the 29th of September with the Petit Verdot.
An intense and luminous garnet red, it offers to the nose exotic scents of delicate spices and marzipan, violet and black berries. In the mouth it is intriguing, harmonious, interwoven with elegant tannins, very long.

A good vintage, with a mild Winter and a normally wet Spring. The phenological stages of the vines were textbook from budding to veraison. Summer was hot but not torrid, in fact, it was refreshed by some showers. The harvest of the varieties dedicated to Caburnio started the 2nd of September with the Merlot and ended on the 30th with the Cabernet Sauvignon. It was a linear harvest – with a few short storms immediately dried by good north winds – which allowed us to pick healthy grapes at a perfect stage of maturation.
Of a deep and shiny ruby red, it offers to the nose immediate aromas of blackberry, blueberry, plum, peony, caramel and coffee. The mouth picks up the baton and the wine opens up as full, creamy, vibrant, with a dense and delicate tannin weave elegantly leading to the final upswing.

Winter was mild and very rainy, followed by a fresh and equally wet Spring. The vines phenological stages were slightly delayed, such as veraison that happened around the half of July. We started harve-sting the Monteti varieties on September the 18th with the Cabernet Franc and finished the 3rd of October with the last Petit Verdot. The harvest was disturbed by a certain weather variability throu-ghout. We had to apply a rigorous selection of the grapes both in the field and on the sorting tables. Therefore the yield was very low and the Monteti number of bottles for this vintage is almost half of the usual production.
Of an intense ruby red, it offers notes of dark fruits, blackberry, sweet spices, licorice, leather and tobacco. Elegant, enveloping and deep at the palate, with a long finale sustained by a good acidity.

Winter was cold and wet. Spring was rainy and with low temperature so the vines growth was slowed down. From June on we enjoyed a warm and breezy summer, enabling good and healty plant development throughout the vineyard. Veraison happenend later than usual and we had to wait until the 9th of September to start harve-sting with the Merlot. The weather was ideal for the entire harvest that ended the 3rd of October with the Cabernet Sauvignon. The selected grapes were very healthy and ripe to perfection.
Deep ruby red, offers a wide range of aromas: dark fruit, spices, cocoa, cassis, leather, Mediterranean woodland with balsamic and floral hints. In the mouth is enveloping, long and elegant, sustained by a good acidity and a fine tannins structure.

Winter was mild and dry. Spring too was characterized by a low rainfall. The vines sprouted slightly sooner than usual but growth was regular and healthy. A very hot summer led to an earlier veraison and harvest. We started with the Cabernet Franc at the beginning of September and concluded with the Petit Verdot on the 20th of the month. A severe selection was applied both in the field and on the sorting tables leading to a very low yield per hectare.
Of a deep ruby red, Monteti 2012 emanates notes of mediterranean woodland, blackberry, leather, rose and graphite. Full bodied and enveloping, a very fine tannic structure leads to a long-lasting finale.

A mild winter, followed by a low-rainfall spring. Budding, growth and veraison very linear, with no sanitary problems. From mid-August an intense heat pushed the maturation of all varieties, leading to an early harvest ended the 20th of September with the Petit Verdot. Low crops for the severe selection in the field of well mature and healthy grapes. Deep ruby red, with an intense nose of blackcurrant and blackberry, followed by notes of tobacco and the balsamic hints of eucalyptus, bay leaves and lavender. Silky and fresh in the mouth, it slowly widens through its mature and well integrated tannins to an opulent and lingering finish.

After a mild winter the vines budded regularly at the end of March. Spring brought some rain which slightly slowed vegetation. A hot and dry summer pushed the harvest to the beginning of September. The result of this season was a smaller yield of high quality grapes with an excellent balance of sugars, acidity and polyphenols.
Deep ruby red. Wide range of aromas. In the mouth a fine and silky entry. Intense, with a good balance between alcohol and acidity. Elegant tannins lead to a long-lasting finish.

With Monteti 2008 we have reached new heights in the production of our flagship wine. Considerably well-balanced, the wine matured earlier than its predecessors showing from the moment it was blended a delightful harmony between its various components. Scents of walnut and cedar embrace notes of black fruit and toasted bread. In the mouth, silkiness and freshness interweave with an excellent web of tannins leading to an excellent and long finish.

An excellent year. The vines enjoyed vigorous vegetation and phenological phases within the norm. The buds appeared in the second half of March after a dry, mild winter. Spring was rainy especially during budding. The temperatures in summer were particularly high, interrupted by occasional rainfalls. The harvest was slowed down by some rain soon cleared by a nice northerly wind in the last ten days of September which brought cool air and sunshine. The harvest was completed on the 9th of October. All the grapes were harvested in excellent conditions and at a perfect ripeness stage.
The three varieties used in the 2008 composition gave excellent results.

This was the perfect year in terms of meteorological trend and vine growth. The seasons progressed harmoniously and in a linear manner. September remained free from phenomena that would have spoiled the harvest, allowing us to pick the grapes at the chosen time, when they were perfectly ripe and in excellent condition, with a good balance of sugar concentration, aromatic complexity and polyphenols.
In a blend which features beautiful harmony between personality and elegance, the Petit Verdot conveys strength and character, the Cabernet Franc embraces it with grace and the Cabernet Sauvignon sustains both with a balanced tannic structure.

A cold and quite rainy winter followed by a quite regular spring. Regular phenological phases and vigorous vegetation. The summer was hot but not stiflingly so. The harvest began on the 4th of September and continued through until the 10th of October. Work was suspended in the middle of September due to light rain and to allow the Cabernet and Petit Verdot to ripen perfectly.
The rather hot and sunny weather during the harvest allowed us to pick nicely ripened grapes which gave origin to thick and elegant tannins, typical of an important wine.
The powerful character of the Petit Verdot, the feminine elegance of the Cabernet Franc and the wise support of the Cabernet Sauvignon come together in the beautiful balance of this vintage. Good acidity makes Monteti 2006 very drinkable.

A cold and rainy winter with the occasional light fall of snow. The spring was also cooler than the seasonal average and it rained. The summer was characterised by a fairly hot July and an August interrupted by some rainfall. Vegetation was vigorous and the phenological phases were within the seasonal average. The harvest was complex. The fine weather that held during the first three quarters of the harvest allowed excellent accumulation of polyphenols and sugar, guaranteeing structure and smoothness. The rain that fell over the last few days unfortunately disturbed the quality of the Cabernet Franc, to such an extent that we excluded it from the final blend. The differences in the composition compared to the previous year reflect the desire to maintain the style and character of our wines, requiring, in a climatically different season, different components.
Warm, spicy and fruity aromas, with interesting mineral notes, accompany a prolonged presence on the palate, enlivened and varied by good acidity.

A cold winter with average rainfall, followed by cool and rainy April and May. The vegetative activities took place within the seasonal norm, with the young vines showing considerable vigour. Veraison took place in mid-July, during what was a fairly average summer. The harvest went ahead according to schedule.
The hot but not excessively dry summer allowed the grapes to ripen perfectly, preventing the formation of vegetal scents. The Petit Verdot, in particular, has already matured considerable aromatic complexity, with olfactory notes spanning from plum to cocoa and Indian ink. Good acidity and a light savouriness liven up the outstanding smoothness of the tannins.

Tre meritatissimi bicchieri al Monteti’18, da petit verdot in prevalenza, integrato dai cabernet franc e sauvignon. Bagaglio aromatico di frutti di bosco, quindi cenni mentolati, speziatura di ginepro e macchia mediterranea. Al palato ha struttura, polpa di frutto, tannini levigati e fresche note di frutti rossi. Nitido e lungo, chiude su note di frutto e macchia. Eleganti e territoriali gli altri vini.

Rosso rubino brillante. Fragrante al naso, di legni pregiati, grafite, un tocco di drupacee, delicati toni floreali nel retrogusto, così come un po’ di cera di candela. Al palato appare levigato, con frutto netto e tannini ben integrati, il cuore ha una certa leggerezza nel finale, senza apparire sedato, un vino sorprendente che invita alla beva.

Ottenuto da uve di Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet e Merlot, nella versione 2017 ribadisce le sue caratteristiche di pregio: è un rosso fragrante e di grande piacevolezza, con una connotazione stilistica sobriamente moderna, dagli aromi definiti e il sorso contrastato.

This would make a good ‘identify the varieties’ question in a blind tasting. Although there’s nothing unusual about Bordeaux grapes and blends in Tuscany, Monteti, the estate’s flagship wine, is rare in majoring on Petit Verdot (more than half) supported by 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. With five years under its belt, it has sweet, floral aromas interleaved with more evolved tobacco and game notes, and a palate of concentrated dark fruit, gamey tapenade richness and fine tannins.

It’s interesting how the petit verdot grape keeps popping up in conversation these days. Back in April, in Bordeaux, a good few of the châteaux mentioned that they were planting more and when I tasted this “Super Tuscan” the other day I was delighted to see that this underrated grape majored in the blend – 55% petit verdot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 20% cabernet franc.
Monteti is made from 28 different micro-plots, which are all vinified separately in bespoke vats. You can taste the care and attention that goes into this intricately assembled wine.
It is like a vintage car purring on a forecourt, pristine and glinting in the sun, begging you to get in for a tear around the countryside.
I absolutely love the class and elegance on display here and, because it is not a silly price,
I venture that Monteti is in a league of its own. Every reader should buy a case – every palate will adore this wine, I promise.

The wood taste in lightly present, but there is a richness in fruit, strong flavoured tannins and a long persistence.

Extraordinary debut for Paolo Baratta’s winery, which has a 25 hectare vineyard. The Monteti 2004, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc with a small part of Alicante and Merlot, reached the final stage of the three glasses competition, proving to be a complex and very fascinating wine. Caburnio 2004 is a very pleasant wine to drink, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante and Merlot.
